Keelboat Sailing Handbook 2020v1 Maverick, SYC Yacht of the Year 2019 Welcome to the 2020 Sailing Season from your SYC Keelboat Sailing Section Committee. Antony Tomkins (Joint Race Secretary) * David Nunn (Pursuit Racing & Results) Jenny Worsfield (Joint Rally Secretary) Kate Leigh (Trophies) Robin Stevenson (Joint Race Secretary) * Tim Worsfield (Joint Rally Secretary) They are contactable by email at sailing-section@sussexyacht.club * members of the Keelboat Race Committee 2020 Objectives  To provide the framework for everyone to enjoy the sport of sailboat racing in whatever capacity and to whatever level the individual desires.  To ensure that the sport of sailboat racing welcomes all people and treats them equally.  To ensure that those who experience sailboat racing are encouraged to continue. Principles and Practices  The sport welcomes all participants; it relies largely on self-compliance and self-policing. Those that deliberately take unfair

advantage of this or behave in an inappropriate manner, either on or off the water, can expect action to be taken against them.  Competitors agree to compete in compliance with the rules and behave in accordance with accepted standards of sailboat racing. When involved in a genuine dispute, all parties to the dispute and those deciding the matter will use the established procedures for achieving resolution.  Foul or abusive language, intimidation, aggressive behaviour or lack of respect for others and their property will not be tolerated.  Organizers, officials and other providers of sailboat racing agree to provide the fairest racing possible. This includes encouraging feed-back and facilitating the resolution of genuine disputes (including protests) in a timely and proper manner.  Support persons agree to encourage their competitors to behave in compliance with the above principles and practices. This Charter applies equally to those who organize, manage, coach,

advise, judge, provide services and compete (including those who support competitors) in sailboat racing. The RYA encourages the adoption and implementation of this Charter, and provides guidance and support to individuals and organizations to assist implementation. This guidance and support is consistent with the practices of World Sailing. with any changes made during the year. Boats can race in two divisions, as IRC (International Rating Certificate), subject to a valid IRC certificate, or NHC (National Handicap for Cruisers). Skippers are responsible for their own application for IRC but the Club will help with the technical side and where possible negotiate group discounts for applications submitted through them. The Club will obtain an initial NHC handicap from the RYA published base list (or if not shown then SYC calculated using the RYA formula). Boats racing under IRC will usually also be counted in the NHC division Pursuiting will continue with a simplified handicap system based on minutes before or after the nominal race start time. Safety – The notes have been reduced in volume but cross referenced to the source websites, please ensure you are familiar with them. RACING OVERVIEW & NOTICES OF RACES 2020 This overview is intended to function as a guide for SYC boats and as Notice of Race for each of the individual events and series. The races described in the overview are organised by the Sussex Yacht Club and are governed by the World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing 2017-2020, the World Sailing Equipment Rules of Sailing, the SYC Keelboat General Sailing Instructions and the IRC Rules. Skippers intending to enter the IRC division should produce a valid IRC certificate; those entering NHC or Pursuit races do not require this but may be asked to provide some details of their boat to the Keelboat Race Committee for the purposes of setting a handicap. Please send a copy of your 2020 current or revised IRC rating certificate to the SYC Keelboat Sailing Section via e-mail to sailing-section@sussexyacht.club as soon as possible and at the very latest by Friday 24th April 2020 for those wishing to be scored for the Spring series and at least 48

hours in advance of the first race of every other series. Boats racing within the IRC class shall comply with the IRC rules as prescribed by their rating certificate. Should a competitor have reason to believe that this is not being complied with, the competitor can arrange a protest under rule 10 of the IRC Rules. Boats in the IRC division shall not change their rating during the course of a series. They can however choose to race under their Non-Spinnaker Rating. Boats sailing in the NHC division, Pursuit and Christmas Cracker races may have their handicaps changed after each race according to the particular rules of each division. Emails, WhatsApp, Texts and Notices Any changes to these races will be communicated to owners/skippers by means of email, WhatsApp or text messages so it is vital that all owners/skippers lodge valid email and mobile details with the SYC Keelboat Sailing section at sailing-section@sussexyacht.club It is the owner or skippers’ responsibility to ensure

that messages can be received through these routes. The primary keelboat racing WhatsApp group is “SYC Racing” and pursuit racing is “SYC Pursuiting”, pursuits also use the Southwick notice board on race days. All races will use VHF Ch 37 when on the water. Classifications and Eligibility The classifications given for each event refer to the race division, series or group and the safety classification. Participants must comply with the safety requirements. Unless described as an open event all SYC racing events are for SYC boats only. Those wishing to join in with our racing should note that new racing crews & non-SYC boat skippers wishing to participate in an SYC race or series should apply for membership of the club at the earliest opportunity; details are on the SYC website www.sussexyachtcluborguk/ Page 4 SYC Keelboat Sailing Handbook 2020 v1 2020 PURSUIT SERIES (Classification: Pursuit) Three series of easy races held on Saturdays with an expected 2-hour race

duration, no previous racing experience and no rating or handicap certificates required. The Pursuit Racing Guidelines are shown on the SYC website and Sailing Instructions and courses will be posted on the SYC Pursuiting WhatsApp group before the start of each race. A sign on sheet together with individual handicaps and race start times will also be found on the SYC Southwick notice board before the start of each race. The starting handicap number will be adjusted as follows: A win carries a penalty of 6 minutes for the next race, 2nd place 5 minutes, 3rd place 4 minutes etc down to 1. If you are last you will be given a boost of 6 minutes for the next race, 5 minutes for the next to last and 4 minutes for 3rd from last etc down to 1. If 12 or more boats finish then this is applied in total, any boats finishing 7th or more from the start or end will not be adjusted. If less than 12 boats finish, then if it is an odd number the middle boat will not be adjusted, if it is an even number

then adjustments will apply from both ends. These numbers will apply for the boat’s first race but be amended for the next race(s) based on a simple adjustment, similar in operation to the usual Pursuit rules but with more weight! The starting NHC number will be adjusted as follows: A win carries a penalty of 0.100 for the next race, 2nd place 0.090, 3rd place 0080 etc down to 0010 If you are last you will be given a boost of 0100 for the next race, 0.090 for the next to last and 0080 for 3rd from last etc down to 0010 If 12 or more boats finish then this is applied in total, any boats finishing 7th or more from the start or end will not be adjusted. It will be awarded to the best performing boat across a combination of the Inshore, Long Inshore and Offshore series, based upon the results calculated under the NHC handicap system. To ensure that any yacht in the fleet has the opportunity to win this prestigious award, only the best two series will count for each yacht. This means, that a yacht which opts not to compete in the Offshore series, for example, will count its series scores from the Inshore and Long Inshore series. A yacht that competes in all three series will discard the series in which it

performs worst. For the Long Inshore and Offshore series, where a yacht does not compete in a race, their score to count for that race will be the total number of entrants in that series plus one. For the Inshore series (as there will likely be different numbers of entrants in each of the individual Inshore series) where a boat does not compete in a race, their score to count for that race will be the total number of entrants plus one across all three of the Inshore series. Because there are a different number of races in each series, an adjustment will be made to the Long Inshore and Offshore series race points. The adjustment will ensure that the same number of points are awarded for each series. To achieve this a multiplying factor of 2 will apply to the Long Inshore series and a factor of 5 to the Offshore series. The number of races to count from each series is roughly half of the races scheduled, and a boats best results will be used towards the Yacht of the Year trophy. In the

event that races are cancelled, and less than the number of races to count from a series are actually raced, the points will be adjusted accordingly to ensure equal weighting for each series. Inshore Series Races designated as Inshore series to count towards the Yacht of the Year trophy are: Spring Series Summer Series Autumn Series There are a total of 21 races in these series, of which 10 will count. Long Inshore Series Races designated as Long Inshore series to count towards the Yacht of the Year trophy are: Solent Tala Hinna Round Rampion Double Diamond Eastbourne Eastbourne Return Ferguson Black Rock Littlehampton There are a total of 9 races in this series, of which 5 will count. Offshore Series Races designated as Offshore series to count towards the Yacht of the Year trophy are: Royal Escape Dieppe Pactolus Seaway Trophy Nab Tower There are a total of 5 races in this series, of which 2 will count. The Royal Escape Race will only be included as an Offshore Result for the

purposes of YOTY for those Yachts which compete further in the Series, see page 10 of the handbook. Page 14 SYC Keelboat Sailing Handbook 2020 v1 2020 RACE OFFICER DUTIES Such a comprehensive sailing program could not be achieved without the support of Skippers undertaking Race Officer duties. You can sign up for your duty at the Keelboat Sailing Meeting on 7th March 2020, otherwise duties will be allocated to boats that have taken part in SYC racing last year. The Race Officer will receive a reminder email the week before their duty, if you are unable to undertake your duty then it is your responsibility to make alternative arrangements (please inform the Keelboat Sailing Section via email sailing-section@sussexyacht.club) Boats that support the racing program by performing Race Officer duties will be scored OOD in the results for NHC and IRC and will be exempt from fees for that race. A boat will receive an average of their valid series results for that race if applicable. Race

Officers will be supported by the Series Officer. The Series Officer will make sure that the Race Officer has all that they need to perform the duty and may assist with course setting on or before the race day. RACE OFFICER GUIDANCE AND STANDARD COURSES Help for Race Officers is available on the SYC website at https://www.sussexyachtcluborguk/sailing/yachtracing/17-help-for-race-officers MAST RAISING AND LOWERING AND PRE-SEASON SAILING SECTION MEETING ETC The Keelboat Sailing Section Pre-Season meeting will be held at the Shoreham clubhouse starting at 12:00 on Saturday 7th March 2020. destinations. We will race down to the Solent and finish between the two forts. We will go into Gosport or Portsmouth for the first night and will arrange a group meal on Friday evening. On Saturday 9th we will sail west to the other end of the Solent to Yarmouth and, again we will organise a group meal. We will sail back to Shepards for the Sunday evening leaving us a reasonable trip home on the Monday. Royal Escape Race Friday 22nd May to Monday 25th May This will be the 43rd edition of the Royal Escape Race to Fécamp. All prospective entrants need to register for the race on the Royal Escape Race website at www.royalescaperacecouk The always popular rally is an informal event leading on from the race itself and usually includes, a cheese & wine do, prize giving hopefully at the Casino and a disco at the Club. Dieppe Rally? and Summer Cruise Friday 12th June to Sunday 14th June and Summer Cruise 14th June to Sunday 28th June We have included Dieppe in the schedule but you will

see that we have a question mark against it. The reason is that the summer cruise follows on immediately from this weekend; the plan is to go to Holland and a number of people have expressed a desire to go there. Before we make a commitment to go to Dieppe, we would like to check weather conditions. If they are favourable, we will include Dieppe and continue east afterwards If they not we may choose to sail up towards Dover so that we can make it to Holland in less time. As the race is in the schedule everyone has the right to do the race and stay in Dieppe if they choose to do so. Even if Jenny and I choose not to go to Dieppe we will be happy to help with any arrangements. Pactolus Rally Friday 10th July to Sunday 12th July There will be a Pactolus dinner on Thursday 9th July at the Shoreham clubhouse with our friends from SRF, followed by the Pactolus race to Fécamp on the Friday. Unlike the previous two years the Pactolus rally does not encompass Bastille Day in 2020 because it

is on a Tuesday. However, it would be great to see as many people as possible at SYC when SRF come to us on the Thursday prior to the race over and I’m sure it will still be a great weekend. If anyone wants to make it a very long weekend and stay in Fécamp to enjoy Bastille Day please let me know. Eastbourne Rally Saturday 8th August to Sunday 9th August The long inshore race on Saturday from Shoreham to Eastbourne starts at 10.00 Alternatively, boats can make their own plans for the journey, either way we will make a group booking for moorings. The people at SHYC are very hospitable and normally lay on a meal for us. There are a number of restaurants on the marina but we hope to get as many as possible joining us at the club. There is another long inshore race back to Shoreham starting on Sunday morning. Hopefully the weather will be kinder to us than it has been the last couple of years and we will get to Eastbourne in 2020! This is a great rally for everyone, including people

who would not normally do a channel crossing. Also, it includes 2 long inshore races Page 22 SYC Keelboat Sailing Handbook 2020 v1 2020 Saint Valéry Rally Friday 28th August to Monday 31st August Sail over at your leisure on the Friday followed by dinner with our most hospitable friends at Club Nautique Valeriquais on the Saturday evening. We need to win back the SYC CNV trophy, so I am making an appeal to all of our young, fit and able sailors to forget Cowes Week, the Fastnet etc and come to Saint Valéry to compete in a much more important event and help us win back the trophy. Sunday is the Seaway Trophy race back to Shoreham. Most Skippers will already be aware that Saint Valéry-en-Caux has tidal restrictions and they will need to satisfy themselves of entry and exit arrangements. Littlehampton Rally Saturday 19th September to Sunday 20th September An enjoyable race to Littlehampton on the Saturday with ferry across the river for dinner at Arun Yacht Club on Saturday

night followed by the Crews race back to Shoreham on the Sunday. Skippers will be aware that Littlehampton has tidal restrictions and they will need to satisfy themselves of entry and exit arrangements.
