Sailing Handbook 2018 X332 Tyke, SYC Yacht of the Year 2016 & 2017 Welcome to the 2018 Sailing Season from your SYC Sailing Section Committee. Guy Stansell, Sailing Captain* Adam Thompson* Ann Macey (Rallies) Antony Tomkins (Race Secretary)* David Nunn (Results) David Skinner (Pursuit Racing) Kate Leigh (Trophies) They are contactable by email at sailing-section@sussexyacht.club * Also members of the Race Committee 2018 Objectives  To provide the framework for everyone to enjoy the sport of sailboat racing in whatever capacity and to whatever level the individual desires.  To ensure that the sport of sailboat racing welcomes all people and treats them equally.  To ensure that those who experience sailboat racing are encouraged to continue. Principles and Practices  The sport welcomes all participants; it relies largely on self-compliance and self-policing. Those that deliberately take unfair advantage of this or behave in an inappropriate manner, either on

or off the water, can expect action to be taken against them.  Competitors agree to compete in compliance with the rules and behave in accordance with accepted standards of sailboat racing. When involved in a genuine dispute, all parties to the dispute and those deciding the matter will use the established procedures for achieving resolution.  Foul or abusive language, intimidation, aggressive behaviour or lack of respect for others and their property will not be tolerated.  Organizers, officials and other providers of sailboat racing agree to provide the fairest racing possible. This includes encouraging feed-back and facilitating the resolution of genuine disputes (including protests) in a timely and proper manner.  Support persons agree to encourage their competitors to behave in compliance with the above principles and practices. This Charter applies equally to those who organize, manage, coach, advise, judge, provide services and compete (including those who

support competitors) in sailboat racing. The RYA encourages the adoption and implementation of this Charter, and provides guidance and support to individuals and organizations to assist implementation. This guidance and support is consistent with the practices of World Sailing. Handicaps - Boat rating data is now shown on the website along with any changes made during the year. For 2018 Skippers can only race as IRC and subject to a valid IRC certificate, the Race Committee may make arrangements to enable a non-IRC boat to join in IRC races on an introductory basis. Pursuiting will continue with a straight forward handicap system based on minutes before or after the nominal race start time. Safety – The notes have been reduced in volume but cross referenced to the source websites, please ensure you are familiar with them. See the regulations at wwwsailingorg/documents/offshorespecialregs for the detail. Caution - For 2018 a number of set race courses that pass near the Rampion construction area will have marks set to ensure that boats keep out of the area. These will be Rampion cardinal marks plus SYC 2 where applicable. Rather than a mark to round they may effectively form one or more exclusion areas SYC 2 will be kept under review and may become a racing

mark again later in the season. SYC Sailing Handbook 2018 Page 3 2018 RACING OVERVIEW & NOTICES OF RACES 2018 This overview is intended to function as a guide for SYC boats and as Notice of Race for each of the individual events and series. Page 12 SYC Sailing Handbook 2018 2018 YACHT OF THE YEAR The SYC Yacht of the Year is designed to find the top Yacht at SYC. It will be awarded to the best performing boat across a combination of the Inshore, Long Inshore and Offshore series, based upon the results calculated under the IRC rating system. To ensure that any yacht in the fleet has the opportunity to win this prestigious award, only two series will count for each yacht. This means, that a yacht which opts not to compete in the Offshore series, for example,

will count its series scores from the Inshore and Long Inshore series. A yacht that competes in all three series will be able to discard the series in which it performs worst. For the Long Inshore and Offshore series, where a yacht does not compete in a race, their score to count for that race will be the total number of entrants in that series plus one. For the Inshore series (as there will likely be different numbers of entrants in each of the individual Inshore series) where a boat does not compete in a race, their score to count for that race will be the total number of entrants plus one across both of the Inshore series. Because there are a different number of races in each series, an adjustment will be made to the Long Inshore and Offshore series race points. The adjustment will ensure that the same number of points are awarded for each series. To achieve this a multiplying factor of 2 will apply to the Long Inshore series and a factor of 4 to the Offshore series. The number of

races to count from each series is roughly half of the races scheduled, and a boats best results will be used towards the Yacht of the Year trophy. In the event that races are cancelled, and less than the number of races to count from a series are actually raced, the points will be adjusted accordingly to ensure equal weighting for each series. Inshore Series Races designated as Inshore series to count towards the Yacht of the Year trophy are: Spring Series Autumn Series There are a total of 14 races in these series, of which 8 will count. Long Inshore Series Races designated as Long Inshore series to count towards the Yacht of the Year trophy are: Solent Tala Hinna Round Rampion Ferguson Double Diamond Black Rock Littlehampton There are a total of 7 races in this series, of which 4 will count. Offshore Series Races designated as Offshore series to count towards the Yacht of the Year trophy are: Dieppe Pactolus Seaway Trophy Nab Tower There are a total of 4 races in this series, of

which 2 will count. SYC Sailing Handbook 2018 Page 13 2018 RACE OFFICER DUTIES Such a comprehensive sailing program could not be achieved without the support of Skippers undertaking Race Officer duties. You can sign up for your duty at the Sailing Meeting on 3rd March 2018, otherwise duties will be allocated to boats that have taken part in SYC racing last year. The Skipper will receive a reminder email the week before their duty, if you are unable to undertake your duty then it is your responsibility to make alternative arrangements (please inform the sailing section via email sailing-section@sussexyacht.club) Boats that support the racing program by performing Race Officer duties will be scored OOD in the results and will be exempt from fees for that race. A boat will receive an average of their valid series results for that race if applicable. HELP FOR RACE OFFICERS AND STANDARD COURSES Help for Race Officer’s is available on the SYC website at

www.sussexyachtcluborguk/sailing/yacht-racing/17help-for-race-officers A range of Standard Courses is available in this handbook (Appendix 2). CHART Notes: The race chart on the next page is based on the positions of the Marks as surveyed by members of the Race Committee in February 2017. The distances and bearings all relate to those positions and there is no urgent initiative to move any of the Marks as their position is considered adequate for racing. However Skippers should satisfy themselves of the positions of the Marks before using them. The latest known positions will be shown on the Club’s website www.sussexyachtcluborguk but weather conditions etc. may alter the reality at any time If you are aware of any changes please record a GPS position and email it to the SYC Sailing section at sailing-section@sussexyacht.club Race Officers can only set courses on known information so any new information will be gratefully received. IRC Sussex Championships at Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club, Eastbourne 16th to 17th June Now in its third year, the IRC Sussex Championships, formally known as “The Sussex Regatta”. The Sussex Regatta was started as a way to improve the standard of yacht racing in and around Sussex by promoting better competition. Through its success, it has had now been recognised as a serious yacht racing event open to all yachts and crew. Increasingly the regatta has attracted entries from further field with up to 70 entries from near & far. The regatta is organized by the Sussex Combined Clubs (SCC) and has been running as an “inter-club collaboration” since 2005 but independently for many years before that. The event has been run by a number of yacht clubs in central Sussex including the Sussex Yacht

Club in Shoreham, Brighton Marina Yacht Club & the Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club in Eastbourne. The hosting club currently rotates between these three clubs and for 2018 it’s the turn of Eastbourne’s Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club. The event will take place between 16th and 17th June 2018 for what promises to be an amazing event with competitive racing and shore based fun for all the family.
