6 by 6 Activities for Is Everyone Ready for Fun? by Jan Thomas 1. Have Fun with Books a. Read the story then have the children act it out(make the floor area the sofa, one child in each group is the chicken, the rest are the cowsthey “holler” “is everyone ready for fun?” and they jump, chicken yells NO JUMPING ON MY SOFA, and they move through the book acting it out. b. They could pantomime the story without talking, using actions and body language to tell the story. c. After you read the story have them exercise doing jumping, dancing, wiggling, nappingand talk about what other “actions/exercises the cows could have done on chicken’s sofa. (hopping, skipping, giggling, yawning, laughing, singing, cryingetc) 2. Look for Letters Everywhere a. Focus on the (-ing) words in the bookpoint out jump and then jumping, etc b. Good book for thinking about capital letters and lowercase letters, since there are so many words with capital letters. I would probably work on a letter

recognition maybe doing a matching game with some of the most used lettersLike match capital J to lower case j c. For older ones talk about all capitals being used in words means to raise your voice! 3. Notice Print All Around You a. Since the book is written using speech bubbles, I would take pictures of the children and draw speech bubbles and write something they say in the bubble and mount on cardstock, so they have their own picture with their “talk”.so they realize that talk can be written down. They love pictures of themselves and speech bubbles 4. Take Time to Rhyme, Sing and Play Word Games a. Jumpbump, dump, grump, hump, lump, pump, rump, thump, stump, plump, trump b. Dancechance, glance, lance, prance, stance, trance c. Wiggle- giggle, squiggle d. Napchap, clap, flap, gap, lap, map, pap, rap, sap, slap, snap, tap, trap, wrap, zap i.Matching game with rhyming words ii.Thumbs up if words rhyme, thumbs down if they don’t iii.Nonsense words vs Real words with –ap

endingkids have fun with nonsense words (skill tested on aimsweb) 5. Talk, Talk, Talk a. Labels for jumping, wiggling, dancing, napping and pictures from the book, match word to picture that shows the action. b. Do a form of Pictionary with “Action words” 6. Tell Stories About Everything a. Talk about sequence in story, what did they do first, next, last? b. Have them put picture cards in order of the animals’ behaviors c. Pick two different animals (instead of cows and chicken) to be in the story and decide what actions they would do and retell the story. submitted by Janet Reynolds, LaCygne Library 6 by 6 Interactive Space Is Everyone Ready for Fun? by Jan Thomas Skill area – Tell Stories About Everything Activity – Animal size vs. chair size  Supplies: image of animals and images of similarly sized chairs for matching Skill area – Tell Stories About Everything Activity – story sequencing  Supplies: print and laminate cards to sequence the action words in
