aspirations of its donors, patients, alumni, and friends. This position is best suited for a thoughtful, organized, responsible professional who has a sense of humor, as well as a strong work ethic, and is interested in creating and building a special team, mentoring and grooming staff, and building careers. UUH is seeking a leader who will contribute to a culture of philanthropy that is donor-centric and based on fundraising objectives that are meaningful, challenging, realistic, and metric- and action-oriented. UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HEALTH BACKGROUNDER | 1 In addition to management responsibilities, the Deputy CPO will also carry a portfolio of principal and major gifts prospects and donors with a focus on fundraising for the neuroscience and cardiac initiatives. University of Utah Health is preparing for the launch of a capital campaign and is expecting to raise $200M in FY 2017, an amount that has surpassed all previous fundraising records at University of Utah Health. In

addition, it has recently secured a $50M appropriation from the state. It will soon be transforming its campus, with public and private funding to construct a new, state-of-the-art medical school, rehabilitation hospital, ambulatory care center, and innovation and discovery center. Utah Health employs staff located in the main Advancement office, throughout the schools, colleges, and clinical departments, and includes the School of Medicine Alumni staff. The office is led by the Associate Vice President and Chief Philanthropy Officer (AVP/CPO) for University of Utah Health who reports directly to the Senior Vice President of University of Utah Health, who also serves as the CEO of University of Utah Health Care and the Dean of the School of Medicine. Reporting directly to the AVP/CPO are the Deputy Chief Philanthropy Officer, a Senior Director of Advancement who oversees the academic fundraising teams, the Senior Executive Director of Advancement, and the Directors of Communications, Advancement Services, and Administration. The Office of Advancement for University of Utah Health works closely with the

University’s central development staff who provide fundraising for all other colleges outside of University of Utah Health and support philanthropy in the areas of corporate relations and information technology. The Benefactors Society is comprised of individuals and couples who are educated through a series of presentations and tours of University of Utah Health. The Educational Resource Development Council is comprised of influential and philanthropic women within the community who are interested in learning about and promoting the latest advances and techniques in fields of health as they relate to University of Utah Health. Active members attend eight presentations a year and provide

donations that support student scholarships within the Colleges of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health, and the Schools of Medicine and Dentistry. They also award funding for various projects and programs within University of Utah Health. The council consists of 60–80 women and has existed for more than 20 years. Structure: The professional staff in the Office of Advancement is aligned primarily in the academic and clinical units, working directly with faculty, physicians, deans, staff, volunteers, patients, and alumni to engage donors and cultivate gifts that benefit the units and University of Utah Health. Advancement staff collaborate with academic and clinical leadership to develop key strategies for cultivation, solicitation, and proposal development. All directors of advancement contribute to creating and managing a comprehensive grateful patient program that employs national best practices to identify new philanthropic donors from the current patient database. They also work with

hospital staff to foster a positive experience for patients and enhance the reputation of the healthcare system that results in transformational philanthropic gifts and community support to provide high quality clinical care, conduct innovative research, and educate the next generation of care givers and scientists. A focus on the “top 25 potential donors” in each unit offers deans, department chairs, and advancement staff an opportunity to review cultivation strategies together regularly. These efforts are supported and facilitated by central development through events, publications, recognition programs, annual giving solicitations, regional events and cultivation activities, and other continuing stewardship efforts. The annual giving teams play a vital role in working with the Alumni Associations and the University Hospital to keep patients, alumni, and future prospects connected to the University, informed of its priorities and accomplishments, and engaged as potential

Previously, John rejoined USC in

2011 to lead the $485M campaign initiative for the Norris Cancer Center as part of the $1.5B comprehensive campaign for the Keck School of Medicine John spent more than nine years serving as vice president for advancement at his alma mater, Loyola High, where he built the development operation and executed a $108M comprehensive capital campaign, the most successful campaign at the time for any Catholic high school in the United States. Position Overview – Deputy Chief Philanthropy Officer The Deputy Chief Philanthropy Officer will report to the Associate Vice President & Chief Philanthropy Officer for University of Utah Health and will be based in Salt Lake City, Utah. S/He will assist the Associate Vice President/Chief Philanthropy Officer, the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, the clinical department chairs, and the directors of advancement in establishing the vision and annual goals for the clinical team and will set departmental fundraising objectives and work plans that are meaningful, challenging, realistic, and metric- and action-oriented. The Deputy Chief Philanthropy Officer will help to build a capital campaign plan and articulate the case

for the campaign and its associated initiatives. While the Deputy Chief Philanthropy Officer will have substantial management, supervisory, and mentoring responsibilities, s/he will also carry a portfolio of principal and major gifts prospects and donors, and be visible with key donor and volunteer constituencies, in order to lead by example. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or equivalent; nine or more years of progressively responsible experience in front-line fundraising and strong working knowledge of industry best practices relevant to the successful cultivation and solicitation of high-level prospects and benefactors for leadership and principal gifts; ability to travel to meet with prospective donors; demonstrated skills in leadership, management, financial planning, quality improvement, and service delivery; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills. This position has no responsibility for

providing care to patients.
